3 Characteristics of Every Dream Job & Why You Should Boycott Labor Day From Your Life Forever

70% of Americans hate their jobs

Their work seems like “TOIL.” They feel:

  1. TRAPPED.
  2. ENSLAVED.
  3. DISSATISFIED.

I call these people the Day Jobbers™.

30% of Americans love their jobs.

Their work doesn’t seem like “TOIL.” They experience:

  1. FREEDOM – They go as you please
  2. FINANCES – They earn as you wish
  3. FULFILLMENT – They you live as you like

I call these people the Dream Jobbers™.

Boycott Labor Day From Your Life Forever

In America on the first Monday in September we celebrate something called Labor Day. (Thank you 1894 Congress) I get the point, I just disagree with the premise. Work shouldn’t feel like labor. This separates Day Jobbers from Dream Jobbers. (Tweet This).

A quick Latin lesson will explain why. There are 2 words for work:

  1. Labōr: toil, work
  2. OPUS: masterpiece, work

When you’re “working” if you’d rather be somewhere else, that’s a key indicator you’re toiling. (Tweet This) Some of us have been toiling for years. We don’t know what’s it like not to toil. But if you’re “working” and it feels like playing then you might just be living your OPUS.

My builder Chet Scott helped me discover my OPUS over the past decade. Here’s one of our favorite quotes that captures OPUS:

A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both. – L.P. Jacks

Day Jobbers only know TOIL. Dream Jobbers only know OPUS. If you want to meet a few dozen people who authored their OPUS, just click here. (Scroll down to their picture then click MY OPUS.) You’ll be amazed at their clarity.

I went from Day Job to Dream Job

Like most people I had a day job.  And also like most people I had a dream.  Knowing the price of being half-alive, I decided to turn my passion into my full-time gig.  Knowing the risks (leaving a salary, benefits, and security + providing for my wife and 3 kids) I discovered a process that made it possible.  This website is now devoted to all those still stuck in their day job prison. I’m committed to encouraging and equipping you while you plan your own escape and jailbreak your job.

Your Day Job was probably a good thing.  It’s just no longer the best thing.  It reflects the person you were, not the person you are or the one you’re becoming. It’s time to go from your Day Job to Dream Job. It’s time to turn your passion into your full-time gig.

Keep coming here (subscribing is easy) and you’ll discover practical tools and applications that lead you from PRISON to PLAN to PAYOFF. Here’s just one free training to get you started.

Before I sign off, I’m incredibly curious. Which are you? A Day Jobber or a Dream Jobber.

Do you feel:

  • Trapped?
  • Enslaved?

I always appreciate your insight. These numbers are disturbing and make me think about what I’m doing every day. Thanks for the reminder. Now, back to my Day Job. Ugh!

  • Having spent 30+ years assisting businesses with their finances, your message says to me that employers should look at their employees and realize that unpurposed = unproductive = unprofitable.

    Wonderful post Kary!
No “LABOR ” in our household on ‘Labor Day’
August is set aside for our family OPUS! Enjoying the highest peaks without snow. No labor in living out our OPUS! On PURPOSE, On FIRE!

  • Barry Smith says:

Awesome post Kary! Thirty years in the construction industry resulted in me being so consumed in what I did, I had totally lost any connection to who I was. Going through the Deeper Path Cohort empowered me to rediscover my identity and start living out my dream job. Thank you my friend!

  • Tammy Noble says:

This post created a cause for pause. I pulled up my OPUS, read it and realized I was about to dive into a project that did not fit. I would have made it through the project, but it would have been laborious. Morale of the story: Once you have your OPUS, keep it in front of you at all times. Thanks for the reminder Kary!
